Tips
Hiya everyone just a quick question, Ive been playing poker from scratch now for 4 years and feel its not enjoyable anymore, playing for sake of playing and disappointed with the lack of results.
Do any of you find that your motivation goes over time and if you have been at the point where I am now what would your suggestions be to get me out my "rut" ? |
Hi Kaz
I was thinking the very same thing a couple of weeks ago. I used to play most nights but was finding i was getting bored and just playing silly hands then i found i was watching more tv in the evenings and bar for the WSOP and the forum games wasnt playing at all.
Then yesterday i was at home in the daytime and played 2 tournies firstly the $6 turbo with 80 runners which i enjoyed and finished second and then the $400 gtd 130 runners in which i finished 4th. Now maybe the break from the monotony of playing every night did me good but im not saying that suits everyone but it did me. I think a good person to give you a better idea would be BENNYTHEDIP2 who im sure when he is online tomorrow will answer this thread and hopefully help you get your enthusiasum for the game back to where it should be.. Good luck anyway and im sure you will be back winning those tournies very soon.... |
thanks for the reply tony I actually had 2 ok results this morning 1st and 3rd in small tourneys, its all just become so stale (think thats right word).
Just cant seem to get out of this rut, 2 early morning tourneys and then I lose all motivation to play anything else. Benny will have a word or 2 for me im sure lol |
Do you think you are playing too much poker? Maybe just targeting 2 or 3 a day would give you the little break you might need and also take away the boredom of sitting in front of a Pc screen for hours on end.
When i get bored or tired i start to play erratic and then that doesnt help as i start to lose and get fed up with the whole thing. |
Wish I could put my finger on it mate but like I said I am basically playing 2 tourneys in the morning then i lose all interest even if I win, very strange lol
|
im looking forward to see what Benny has to say on this......it could help me out too.

pmsl after writing this I got 1st in graveyard, then 6th and 9th in 2 others, maybe sharing my worries helped. Still need someone elses point of view tho sensible responses please :)

oioi muffy , i think your like a lot of other players me included. up to 18 mths ago it was easy to play 60hrs a week against the vast majority of people who joined the poker revolution and win decent money.
now all them 1,000s have also learnt to play decent poker , so we now seem to play tighter and pray for no outdraw. i now play a lot less as im not enjoying it as i was 2 yrs ago, i seem to go on auto pilot and wait to get muffed, i for 1 am now very stale a fed up with online poker but it was a great crack for 2 or 3 yrs ,and am now pursuing a new carreer in talking bllx on forums. be lucky hun and hope you get your appetite back |

Kaz ---The Game of Poker !!
You are a very good player, the thing you need to think about is stepping up your game. By that i mean, more selective to what you play and probably up the level you play at !!
I'm not sure that playing 4-6 tournaments( or more a day) is a good idea. I know players like "Daddymac" and "wildrick"(on Ladbrokes) play 8 tourneys at at a time :eek!: but how mentally destroying is that ?? OK, they are going for the big payout at the end of the year but even "Daddymac" stopped playing last year after September when he was clear of the field. As you know, I'm a grizzly old f..ker but I've been playing this game since 'God was a boy', both live and in recent years on the Internet !! When i started playing it was in local cash games about 8 of us played half-pot 7 card stud, back in the 80's and we used to really have the craic, the money used to go around in the main, some were consistent losers but they could afford it so everyone was happy :'D Then i got to hear of tournament 7 card stud being played in Luton !! (remember this was before Internet Poker) So me and my best mate (Rod Boland god rest his soul) started playing on a regular basis twice a week their and once a week in our cash game, and in the main we were winning. Then Hold-em started to make a big impact in the casino's and the yanks started to come over and the explosion happened and we all had to catch up on the new game quick. I was and still am good friends with Mike McGee, Top pro through the 90' and early 2000's and here's where we start to understand the Ups and Down of poker. I know most of the old poker pros some still do the circuit, some just play local but i meet up with them from time to time and we all agree the same thing, 'this game can burn you out' the same as any other sport, if you play to much football or athletics or poker you start to get jaded and lose 'the edge' and in poker the 'edge is the difference between winning and losing cash !! So is the same with Internet poker, ive been where you are feeling disillusioned about the game but 'for things to change you must change':h?: I would strongly recommend playing only ONE Multi-tournament a day, pick one that excites you, if you need to play more play some STT's through the day or low stakes cash but most of all get away from your 'pc' for a while take some breaks during the day :brains: Finally remember poker is a game of skill however luck has a way of knocking your confidence in your own ability and that's when you have to take a break from the game, a week or two and come back fresh. Ultimately there are casualties players cant come back and give the game up but if you pace yourself, you'll start to enjoy the game again. Try if you can to get to a casino and play a live tournament, it will spice the game up again for you, i sometimes get down but i never now lose the 'buzz'!! good luck , kiddo your a good player just learn to play less and enjoy more :loveme: benny:cool: |
superb Benny, i think everything you said is correct, Burn out happens in everything and a rest re charges your appetite for the game..

cheers benny :clap:o:)
